SANDPOINT — Lakeland flipped the script on the Bulldogs.
In the first matchup between the two 4A Inland Empire League foes on Jan. 15, Sandpoint put the Hawks in a 28-12 first-half hole en route to a 43-34 win.
On Thursday night, Lakeland used a 37-17 halftime lead to down the Bulldogs 63-49 and end a six-game losing streak to Sandpoint.
"In a sense, it was kind of a doppelganger to our win against them," head coach Will Love said.
The Hawks came out soaring in the first quarter. Within the first 10 seconds of the game, the Hawks pulled up and drilled a 3-pointer. From there it was all Lakeland.
The Hawks built a 17-6 first-quarter lead and the advantage swelled to as many as 23 in the second quarter. At one point, Lakeland went on a 11-0 run while keeping Sandpoint from scoring for over four minutes.
Addie Kiefer and Katy Ryan combined for 24 points in the first half to help Lakeland take a 20-point lead into the locker room.
"Lakeland did a good job moving the basketball in the first half," Love said. "There's some things defensively that we emphasized that we struggled with there at the beginning and that allowed them to start the offense where they felt comfortable."
In the third quarter, Kaylee Banks tried her best to spark a Sandpoint comeback by scoring eight straight points for the Bulldogs to open the half.
But every time SHS tried to dig into the Hawks’ lead, Lakeland answered right back to keep the Bulldogs at a distance.
Sandpoint cut the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter, but was unable to get any closer.
"Big credit to Lakeland because they came out prepared to play," Love said, "and they executed their game plan right at the start and put us on our heels, and it took us a while to get out of that."
Kaylee Banks finished with a game-high 21 points and four steals. Her younger sister, Karlie Banks, tallied 11 points and six rebounds and Hattie Larson added six points, six rebounds and four steals.
Despite the defeat, Love was proud of his team for not folding in the second half and continuing to battle. He also said they did a good job playing man defense throughout the night.
"You're worried in situations when you get down early that it could just keep snowballing," he said, "and I'm really proud that the girls fought back. That says a lot about who they are as a team that they continued to fight until the last whistle."
Ryan finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Hawks and Keefer added 18 points and seven rebounds.
Sandpoint (7-8, 4-6 IEL) hosts rival Moscow at 3 p.m. Saturday for Senior Night.
The Bulldogs will need to win that game and Tuesday's game at Post Falls to keep their hopes alive for the No. 1 seed to the 4A Region 1 tournament.
"We got to take care of business on Saturday against Moscow and that game on Tuesday could be a big game," Love said.
