Jan. 31, 1971 – PROUDLY WE SALUTE

John Dalebout, Priest River, completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex. and is assigned to Sheppard AFB, Tex. for communications training. Airman Dalebout is a 1969 PRHS graduate.

‘UNDERGROUND PRESS’ DEFENDED

Dr. J.P. Munson, local physician and school board member, a surprise speaker at the weekly Rotary luncheon, discussed the “underground press” authored by a group of SHS students. He called the students “a group of fine young people,” saying the paper contained a clear message: ‘We are unhappy and here are the reasons.’ It said to the community’s adults: ‘You don’t know what you’re doing.’ Noting that “100 sticks of dynamite could not create a greater reaction” than did the 100 copies of the paper, Munson said teachers and administrators used punitive measures against those involved, adding “parental reaction was very violent.”

GIRLS TIED FOR ‘JOBIE OF THE YEAR’

Candy Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jones, Lignite Road; and Lynn Balch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loran Balch, Sagle, are recipients of the “Jobie of the Year” award. This is only the second time since Edna Spealman began the program that a tie resulted. The Sandpoint Jobies have invited the Bonners Ferry Bethel to go along on a bus trip to the Spokane Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children, after which they will have a roller skating party, and then a slumber party.

The Sandpoint Lumber & Pole co. loaded a carload of ship timbers at the Culver Spur track for shipping to a London, England boat-building firm.

PACK RIVER – SUNNYSIDE NEWS

Mary Peterson, Gertrude Ramsey and Florence Hawkins, who attend Sandpoint high, came here Friday to spend the week-end at their homes.

Attendance at school has fallen away a little the past two weeks, due to the prevalence of colds.

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Palmer have returned to their ranch after spending a part of the winter in town.

The Misses Lucy and Ethel Ashley who were in Sandpoint for the funeral of their brother, Eli, of Pack River, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Hawkins, returning to Spokane Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sires took a large party from here in their speed truck to attend the funeral in Sandpoint of Eli Ashley of Pack River.

ODEN-CULVER NEWS

H.J. Cuenat and H.S. Crowder were in Sandpoint for the funeral of Eli Ashley, one of the most upright, honest men in the area.

The past week has been busy, the sleighing excellent and all the teams busy hauling lumber and posts from Lightning creek to Culver Spur.

Mrs. T.T. McGee is ill with la grippe.
