Organizers of a new gravel cycling race scheduled for August around Whitefish are looking for volunteers to assist with the race.
Whitefish native and cyclist Jess Cerra, and her partner, Sam Boardman, are planning The Last Best Ride set for Aug. 22.
Cerra says the race has about 40 people signed up to volunteer in various positions, but could use at least double that number to assist with race logistics before, during and after the race.
The race is sold out with the number of riders capped at 550. Two course distances are planned —a 90-mile course with an 8,200 feet elevation gain and a 47-mile short course with a 4,400 elevation gain. The exact race courses haven’t yet been set.
A goal of the race is to get women involved in the sport, but also as a way to give back to the community, Cerra noted. As part of the race, organizers have created the Barbara Mansfield Champion Scholar Award, which uses 20% of the race proceeds to a scholarship fund designated for female students in or near Whitefish seeking post-secondary education.
Volunteers are needed for various spots, including at the packet pick-up table, for start and finish set up, to work at aid stations along the course, as course marshalls to direct riders and manage traffic and to assist with managing a welcome party for racers.
Volunteers get a meal as part of the post-race celebration, and will also be invited to the volunteer appreciation party planned for a few weeks after the race.
Volunteers who might want to race next year also get priority registration for the 2022 race.
