PRIEST RIVER — The Pend Oreille Rowing and Paddling Association (PORPA), in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is hosting a celebration of non-motorized water recreation at the Priest River Recreation Area (The Mudhole) from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, August 21.

The inaugural event is called the Priest River Sprints and all single human-powered watercrafts, including kayaks, canoes and SUPs, are welcome for fun races and a chance to meet fellow flat water boaters. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

The highlight event will be a relay race of at least three different non-motorized watercraft racers competing as a team against other teams. Sprints will be between 500-1000 meters (less than a mile).

The Kalispel Tribe will bring their traditional canoes and offer participants and spectators stories about the local waterways.

Registration is free for junior racers (14 and under). Race slots are limited so all racers must register at PORPA.org by Tuesday, August 10. Registration includes an event T-shirt.

Prizes will be awarded for junior racers and winning relay teams at the Picnic Pavilion, where a potluck BBQ will be held. Spectators are encouraged to watch the event for free from the beach or the Highway 2 bridge.
