COEUR d'ALENE — Improvements to traffic signals on Sherman Avenue are underway and expected to be completed next month.

The lights at several intersections from Independence Point to Fifth Street are part of the federally funded project.

While Sherman Avenue was closed temporarily Tuesday morning, the work will primarily be performed at night.

"Traffic delays should be expected at all hours until signal work at all six intersections can be completed in mid-August," according to a statement from Chris Bosley, a project manager and engineer with the city of Coeur d'Alene.

Upgrades include new signal heads, pedestrian push-buttons and signal heads, controllers, cabinets, vehicle detection and communication radios.

"The much-needed improvements will increase traffic efficiency, pedestrian safety, and ADA compliance in our downtown," Bosley wrote.

The project is being funded by a federal grant through the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council.
