Ephrata boys beat Chelan, 67-59; Tiger girls defeated

The Ephrata High School boys basketball squad pulled away late in the second half for the 67-59 victory over visiting Chelan High School on Friday night in Ephrata.
The Ephrata Tigers trailed Chelan, 14-12, after the first quarter. Both teams turned up the offense in the second quarter, and Ephrata took the lead, 33-30, at halftime.
The Tigers narrowly held on to their lead in the third quarter, holding off Chelan to take a 49-45 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Tigers pulled away in the final eight minutes to win, 67-59.
Ethan Black and Gavin Burns finished with 17 points each. Kyle Hendrick chipped in 14 points down low, while Jacob Rawley finished with nine.
Ephrata boys head basketball coach Brandon Evenson said he was happy to see his team find a win despite not playing its best basketball for four quarters.
“I thought our rebounding was really solid tonight,” Evenson said. “They were much bigger than we are, but rebounding is about heart, and we showed we have more heart tonight.”
The same night, a big third quarter from Chelan High School proved the difference, as Ephrata’s girls basketball team fell 60-47.
The teams were neck-and-neck in the first half. Down two at 18-16 after the first quarter, Ephrata fought back to hold a 27-26 advantage coming out of the first half. The Tigers were unable to match the Chelan offense in the second half as the visitors jumped out to a 49-39 lead after the third quarter.
Ephrata pulled within 10 points a few times in the fourth, but was unable to string together a run, giving Chelan a 60-47 win. Ephrata was led by freshman Addison Mills, who finished with another double-double in her first varsity season with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Hayden Mills added nine points and nine rebounds.
Both teams lost Saturday to Okanogan, the boys 67-49 and the girls 46-27. The Tigers face Quincy at home Tuesday, the girls at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30.
