COEUR d'ALENE — The message of "Live. Love. Be United!" will be shared throughout the community during the North Idaho Pride Alliance's 2021 CDA4Pride Campaign.
Presented by the North Idaho Pride Alliance, a nonprofit that supports the LGBTQ community through networking, advocacy and education, the campaign includes a series of educational, inclusive and fun events that will take place throughout the month. These events are in lieu of the annual Pride in the Park one-day festival.
June is LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) Pride Month in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots, an uprising that took place in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. That marked the start of a movement to outlaw discrimination and practices against LGBTQ Americans.
"The reason why we still very much need to celebrate Pride Month here in Idaho, while there are times there are maybe disparaging messages coming from policy makers or in our own local culture or institutions, there is also a lot of support that has been building here," Jessica Mahuron, outreach coordinator for the North Idaho Pride Alliance, said Tuesday. "This year I have noticed a dramatic increase in volunteerism and people who want to support this. We are seeing progress with businesses sporting a CDA4Pride logo.
"This visibility is key to changing the local culture and making this an inclusive community for all," she added. "North Idaho Pride Alliance, we are champions for inclusion in North Idaho, for all people."
CDA4Pride events taking place this month:
• Working with LGBTQ Communities Virtual Workshop — Today — 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The interactive workshop facilitated by Spectrum Center Spokane and sponsored by the Human Rights Consortium will encompass language, issues and experiences related to LGBTQ+ communities. Pre-registration is required. Participants may register up until the event begins.
• CDA4Pride Tie-Dye Party — Saturday — 3 to 5 p.m. Outside the Human Rights Education Institute, 414 W. Fort Grounds Drive. Materials will be provided. Attendees are welcome to bring an item of choice to tie-dye. CDA4Pride T-shirts will be available to tie-dye and take home with a suggested $10 donation.
• Inclusion in Faith Panel and Short Documentaries — June 9 — 6 to 8 p.m. At HREI. The panel will feature multiple perspectives on faith, the LGBTQ+ community and kindness. Voices, short films and resources will be shared to shed light on the complex issue of inclusion in the church.
• Sanctuary of Self Love — June 12 — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at G.O. Phippeny Park, 827 N. Eighth St. This is an all-inclusive event focusing on health, wellness and self-care, featuring several workshops and activities throughout the day including healthy relationships and living, a morning walk, yoga, tai chi and an opportunity to receive a COVID-19 vaccination shot on site from Panhandle Health District.
• Pride Night Out — June 16 — 6 to 9 p.m. Meet at HREI to first experience the "LGBTQIA+ Icons and Activists" exhibit. This arts and culture crawl to “paint the town rainbow” will include exhibit visits at the Museum of North Idaho and Emerge CDA and will end at the Crown and Thistle for food and drink.
• CDA4Pride Games and Social — June 19 — 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Ramsey Park, 3525 N. Ramsey Road. Heritage Health is sponsoring a free, family-friendly event to celebrate diversity and inclusion for the LGBTQ community. Yard games, board games, activities, refreshments and more. Families with children of all ages are welcome.
• Pride on the Runway — June 25 — 6 to 9 p.m., the Hive CDA, 400 N. Fourth St. This evening of drag, fashion and festivities to benefit North Idaho Pride Alliance is sold out because of overwhelming demand.
"While we can’t sell any more tickets, we are really excited about Pride on the Runway," Mahuron said. "We definitely think this is going to be an annual event."
