ROYAL CITY — Royal High School senior Caleb Christensen has decided to continue his football career next season at Whitworth University in Spokane.

Christensen leaves Royal as a two-time state champion, with a strong possibility of a third if it hadn’t been for COVID-19. The Knights were dominant on offense this season, taking down three 4A opponents and marching to a perfect record.

Christensen said the decision gives him an opportunity to stay close to home and join a successful football program.

“Off the field, they have a really strong foundation; they just seem like good people,” Christensen said.

He said Whitworth was one of the first schools to reach out to him after his junior year. Christensen said that was a big thing, having them alongside him, talking to him from the get-go.

Christensen will be joined by his former teammate, Carter Dorsing, who graduated last year.

“I think it will be really cool to play with him; he’s a hard worker and a freak athlete,” Christensen said. “I think that will be neat to get to play with him.”

While the team only had a few games this spring, Christensen said he was able to grow in reading opposing defenses in the short time on the field. His leadership is one area he said he was able to improve, which, he added, is easier with a lot of other talented players and leaders at his side.

Christensen said he has had great coaches, on and off the field, supporting him the entire way.

“The same goes for the community who’ve always been so supportive,” Christensen said. “Everyone here is so tight knit and close, they’re always wondering how things are going and always supporting the football team. They’re all so into it.”

He said it’s been cool continuing a rich tradition of success for RHS football.

Off the field, Christensen said he’s looking at pursuing a career in business.

“I want to go in and compete and give it everything I have,” Christensen said. “There’s nothing I’m afraid of, there’s nothing holding me back.”
