A second suspect is in custody after a fatal Memorial Day shooting.

Detectives arrested 23-year-old Liberty Lake resident Dennen T.G. Fitterer-Usher in Spokane Valley.

Police confirmed the shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. Monday.

The deceased man was identified as Gabriel R. Casper, 20, of Coeur d’Alene.

Law enforcement responded to the area of 23rd Street and Coeur d’Alene Avenue.

A resident in that area told The Press on Tuesday that he did not hear a gunshot the previous night, but noticed a commotion and saw several people gathered around a person lying in the street.

Casper was pronounced dead at Kootenai Health later Monday evening.

Detectives from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Idaho State Police, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office worked throughout the night and into Tuesday to locate the first suspect.

Tuesday at 4:15 p.m., detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in Spokane Valley.

Detectives arrested Matthew J. Holmberg, 19, of Spokane Valley.

Holmberg and Fitterer-Usher were booked into the Spokane County Jail and are awaiting extradition to Idaho.

Police said suspects were spotted at Walmart in Smelterville after the shooting.

Deputies with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office reportedly searched for additional evidence in the area.

An investigation is ongoing.
