A man was killed in a two-vehicle collision east of Coeur d'Alene on Interstate 90 Monday morning.

According to the Idaho Police, Edward L. Phillips, 74, of Port Angeles, Wash., was westbound in 2005 GMC Sierra about 8:30 a.m. when he began "slowing to a stop due to a hazard in the roadway" near milepost 22.

Police said Alvin S. Lauter, 86, of Chicago, was also westbound in a 2019 Ford Escape when he "failed to stop for Phillips' slowing vehicle" and struck it.

Lauter was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, ISP said.

Phillips and his passenger were wearing seat belts and were treated and released at the scene.

An investigation continues.
