A man was killed in a two-vehicle collision east of Coeur d'Alene on Interstate 90 Monday morning.
According to the Idaho State Police, Edward L. Phillips, 74, of Port Angeles, Wash., was westbound in a 2005 GMC Sierra about 8:30 a.m. when he began "slowing to a stop due to a hazard in the roadway" near milepost 22.
Police said Alvin S. Lauter, 86, of Chicago, was also westbound in a 2019 Ford Escape when he "failed to stop for Phillips' slowing vehicle" and struck it.
Lauter was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, ISP said.
Phillips and his passenger were wearing seat belts and were treated and released at the scene.
An investigation continues.
