The Memorial Community Center will host an artists reception for painter Kathy Gorup and hand-turned wood bowl maker Denny Gorup on Saturday, June 19 from 3-6 p.m.

Admission is free, and wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Dawn Brinker, chair of the board for the Memorial Community Center, said Kathy Gorup focuses on landscape and still life paintings. Kathy also helps teach art classes at the community center along with Kally Thurman, she said.

Kathy attended the California College of the Arts, she said, before earning her teaching certificate.

Her husband Denny was a carpenter for years before he started making bowls.

“His work is so intuitively nice,” Kathy said. “He just started to do woodturning about three years ago.”

Several pieces will be for sale, Kathy said, with a portion of proceeds going to support the community center.

The center also recently had a new floor completed, thanks to donations from Spokane Teachers Credit Union.

“A hugethank you to STCU for their generous grant,” Brinker wrote. “It gives the center a new modern look and provides a wonderful space for all our group activities and larger events. We have noticed an uptick in our facility rentals now that the space is so accommodating and welcoming.”
