Othello boys take first at GSL Tournament

MEAD — The Othello High School boys wrestling team wrapped up its first and only season in the Greater Spokane League with a first-place finish at the 2021 GSL Tournament last Wednesday at Union Stadium in Mead.

The Othello Huskies finished first overall by a wide margin with a team score of 290.5. Second place Rogers High School finished with 174.

At 106 pounds, Othello’s Victorino De La Cruz took first place match over teammate Troy Mendez, who placed second. Isaac Campos placed second overall at 113, with teammate Marcos Zuniga finishing fourth.

Alexander Mendez finished third overall in the 120-pound weight class, defeating West Valley’s Isaiah Wilson. Adriel Flores finished fifth overall in the same division. Anthony Abundiz finished second at 126 pounds, while Miguel Amezola placed third in the same weight class.

Andres Deleon placed fifth at 132 pounds. Forrest Roylance placed third at 138 pounds, while Zak Rocha finished third overall at 145. Kyler Freeman finished fifth overall at 145.

Senior Jonathan Gomez defeated North Central’s David Johnson in the first-place match at 152 pounds last week. Teammate and fellow captain Arturo Solorio finished first at 160 pounds, defeating Isaac Sweeney from Rogers High School. Dallin Freeman placed sixth overall at 160.

Brandon Garza placed fourth at 195 pounds. Teammates Damian Garza and Anthony Trujillo placed third and fourth overall respectively in 220-pound division. Freshman Josue Solorio fell to Rogers’ Jordan Searls in the first place heavyweight bout at 285.
