LEGION BASEBALL: 'Relentless' Lums sweep Yakima again
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 7 months AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — Troy Shepard struck out 11 in 4 1/3 innings in the opener, and Owen Benson pitched a five-inning shutout in the nightcap as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” squad swept the Yakima Pepsi Beetles 10-2 and 11-0 in Legion baseball Sunday at Thorco Field.
Shepard yielded three hits and two unearned runs for Coeur d’Alene (13-4). Benson scattered four hits and fanned five.
“When we pitch it like this, we’re not going to get beat very much,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “Our three pitchers were spot-on today; it was fun to watch.”
Marcus Manzardo went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the first game for Coeur d’Alene, and Joe DuCoeur, who finished with five hits on the day, was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Ryan Schneider knocked in five runs in the second game for the Lums, going 2 for 3 and scoring twice.
Coeur d’Alene scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game to expand on a 3-2 lead, and tallied nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings in the second game after leading 2-0.
“We’re just relentless on offense; our guys, we’re going to get to them eventually,” Taylor said. “We’ve put an emphasis on two-out RBIs, and I think we had eight today.”
The Lums also swept the Beetles on June 5 in Yakima.
Coeur d’Alene heads to Montana this week for a series of games, opening Wednesday vs. Pocatello in Belgrade.
