LEWISTON - Between Tristan Clift's Game 1 pitching and an 11-hit attack in Game 2, Northern Lakes swept the host Lewis-Clark Cubs 5-0 and 13-3 in Class A Legion Baseball on Monday evening.

Clift, who recently returned from an arm injury, allowed only four hits and two walks over seven shutout innings in the opener. He struck out five.

"Tristan continued to do what he's done all year, since he returned to pitching," Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. "He was absolutely dominant, and we needed him to be because we struggled to score runs in the first game."

The Mountaineers (8-5) scored the only run they would need in the top of the first, as Clift drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on an error, then scored on Sam Pemberton's RBI single.

Jacob Hessing went 3-for-4 with two doubles in the opener, part of his 5-for-8 evening with four doubles and four RBIs.

"So happy to see Jacob break out like that ... he really was due," Johnson said. "He's been hitting the ball extremely hard, but just right at people. Tonight he and Sam Pemberton finally started finding the gaps."

In the nightcap, Northern Lakes scored six runs in the opening frame, then closed out the contest with four in the fifth. Three of those scored on Louis Powell's three-run homer.

Powell earned the Game 2 victory on the mound, allowing two earned runs over 3.1 innings. Scott Pote closed out the game with 1.2 innings of shutout pitching.

"Louis made an adjustment from Game 1 to Game 2, and it really paid off for him," Johnson said. "It was great to see that ball clear the fence. He absolutely lit it up at the plate in the second game."

The Mountaineers return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader against Silver Valley in Osburn.
