MISSOULA — Caden Williams hit a 3-run inside-the-park homer and threw five innings of shutout ball for the Libby Loggers, who held on for a 9-8 win over the Missoula A Mavericks in Legion baseball Tuesday.

It was the first game of a doubleheader split, with the Mavs taking the nightcap 12-6.

Williams had the big blow in the first game as Libby (8-15) took an 8-0 lead, and the Loggers also had an RBI double from Landon Haddock in the third inning.

But the biggest play may have been a wild pitch on strike three to Tripp Zhang in the sixth: Zhang reached and Williams, who’d walked to lead off the inning, scored to make it 9-0.

Missoula then closed the gap to 9-8 in their half against two relievers, thanks to six walks, one hit batter, a single and an error. Libby’s Tucker Masters came in to get the third out via strikeout and finished up for the save.

Williams allowed three hits and four walks in his five innings of work.

In the second game deficits of 6-0 and 11-3 were too much for Libby to overcome.

Sam Matosich got things going for Missoula with a 3-run double in a 4-run first inning, and added an RBI during a 5-run fifth with a bases-loaded walk. It was one of four walks issued by Libby pitchers in the inning, along with two hit batters.

Williamson had a 2-run triple during the Loggers’ 3-run fourth inning; Caden Williams and Williiamson had RBI singles to cut the gap to 12-6 in the seventh.
