Strasburg named women's
soccer coach at Eastern
Eastern Washington Associate Vice President/Athletic Director Lynn Hickey announced the hiring of the fourth head coach in women's soccer history, Missy Strasburg on Wednesday. Strasburg takes over at the helm following a five-year stint at the United States Air Force Academy where she served in an assistant coach role.
"I am so honored to be selected as the next head women's soccer coach at Eastern Washington University. It has been a long-time dream of mine to take the helm of a program like this and contribute to the local community that has had so much to do with my own growth and development," said Strasburg. "I am humbled by the trust of Lynn Hickey, Don Ross, Mikayla Anderson and the rest of the EWU community has shown in me. I look forward to getting to the work of helping these young women grow into champions and leaders of character on and off the field."
"We are very excited to have Coach Strasburg as a part of the Eagle athletic family. She has great experience both at the collegiate and club level as a coach and a recruiter," Hickey said."It was even more special to bring someone back home, for she grew up in this area and has a true feel for Eastern Washington. She is a competitor on the field and is also known for her work in developing leadership programs for student-athletes. We look forward to working with Missy as she continues the success of Eastern Washington soccer."
At Air Force, Strasburg coached the Falcons to a 10-7-1 record in 2019 for the best single-season win percentage in the program's Division I history. That season also saw the team score 36 goals with seven shutouts and a program record 28 assists. Three players also earned All-Mountain West honors, including the MWC Player and Newcomer of the Year.
Strasburg guided the Falcons to 14 total wins in 2017 and 2016, qualifying for the Mountain West Tournament for the first time since 2005 during the 2017 season.
Eastern women add Boesel,
Warns to women's basketball
First year Eastern Washington University women's basketball coach Joddie Gleason announced Jordyn Boesel and Devynn Warns Eagles that will join the squad this fall.
Jordyn Boesel, a 5-foot-9 guard out of Okanogan, Wash., heads to Eastern Washington as a graduate transfer after four years at Saint Mary's College in California. Devynn Warns is a 5-7 shooting guard out of Renton, Wash., where she attended Liberty High School.
Boesel joins the Eagles after four seasons at Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. Boesel, who was just named to the Honorable Mention West Coast Conference All-Academic team, graduated from SMC with a degree in business administration and will join the Eagles as a graduate transfer while she earns her M.B.A.
"Jordyn will be a grad transfer in the MBA program and will bring veteran leadership to our young squad. She is a tough player who has experience competing in the West Coast Conference for the past four years," said Gleason. "She knows what it takes to be a collegiate athlete, how to work hard and will bring energy to the program, along with the ability to shoot from behind the arc at a good percentage."
Her senior year at Saint Mary's saw her play in 24 games, starting two. In her first career start against San Diego on Feb. 11, she scored a career-high 17 points after going 5-of-8 from three-point range. She finished the year averaging 3.6 points per game with an average of 14.6 minutes per contest and shot 42.3 percent from the field.
In four years with the Gaels, she averaged 8.5 minutes and 1.7 points per game in 73 total contests, while helping SMC to back-to-back WNIT appearances.
Boesel prepped at Okanogan High where she was a four-year letter winner in both volleyball and basketball and graduated in 2017. She earned All-League honors all four years, including three first-team selections. Boesel helped guide the Bulldogs to back-to-back 2B WIAA state titles, finishing 27-0 during both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. In 2015-16, she was named second-team all-state. During her four years at Okanogan, she averaged double-figures all four years, including 16 points and 7.8 rebounds per game as a senior.
Her father, Bryan Boesel, played football at Eastern Washington from 1989-93.
Warns, a 5-foot-7 freshman shooting guard, joins the Eagles after four standout seasons at Liberty High in Renton, Wash., where she was a four-year letter winner for the Patriots.
"Devynn will join us as a walk-on this season and has shown that she is a physical, aggressive guard who could score at all levels during her career at Liberty High School," Gleason said. "She will provide depth at the shooting guard position and has a contagious positive energy that will be vital to our program's success. We look forward to having another Washington native join our roster."
As a freshman, Warns was named the 2A/3A Kingco Defensive Player of the Year and earned first-team all-league honors. During her junior year, she was named the 2A/3A Kingco Most Valuable Player after leading the division in scoring and was selected as a Washington State All-Star. During her time at Liberty, she helped guide the Patriots to their first WIAA State Tournament appearance in 27 years.
She averaged 14.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a freshman before improving to 18.3 points per game as junior. In her shortened senior year, Warns scored 184 points in just eight games, averaging 23 points per game. She once again led the 3A/4A division in scoring and reached the 1,000 point milestone.
