EDITORIAL: CRT opinions unwarranted

The articles in The Press recently, concerning what is going to be taught or not taught in our public schools about Critical Race Theory have been disappointing and sad.

This is a very serious conversation that is taking place all across the country. It seems that the articles have been more “heat than light.”

The June 18 editorial, “Witch Hunt Comes Up Empty,” was a good example why people distrust the media. The title and terms used, “harbors witches,” “hoisting their pitchforks,” “cauldron of indoctrination,” “facts would only get in the way” are inflammatory and aimed to dismiss or shame the people with dissenting ideas to be dismissed as kooks.

Ridicule is a tool of irrational persuasion that is used to elicit an emotional response without a rational argument. A picture of two cute teen girls is hardly proof that “indoctrination” isn’t taking place!

I believe we can do better than that. Why not have articles that give clear facts why the school needs to teach from an “Equity Framework” and exactly what that would look like in the classroom? Then have articles explaining why people find this objectionable.

In actuality, “Equity Framework,” “Critical Race Theory,” “Intersectionality,” “Social Justice” are all part of the same discussion that is affecting our culture. Let’s have real discussion instead of ridicule and name calling.
