WALLACE — Earlier this month, the Shoshone County Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing stemming from a recent application to allow a recreational vehicle park in the Woodland Park area of Burke Canyon.

The meeting was a continuance from May 12, where it was paused in order to give the applicant time to comply with various agencies requirements for operating such a facility.

Lisa Johnston had filed for a conditional use permit (CUP) in April of this year, seeking permission to build a multi-space RV Park on property at 6073 Burke Road.

Shoshone County Planning and Zoning Administrator Dan Martinsen received an email from Johnston on April 12, where she listed out her desire to create 12 self-contained RV spaces on four different parcels of land, as well as four tent spaces, and the installation of a sump and vault system.

According to Shoshone County Planning and Zoning Director Dan Martinsen, the applicant was able to make enough suitable changes to her facility for the commission to approve her conditional use permit (CUP) for the RV park.

Martinsen explained that the permit would allow use for RVs and campers that are self-contained as there are no special waste disposal facilities on site.

The CUP also prohibits individual tent camping as there are no specific approved restroom facilities on site, however tent camping on the site is approved if the tent in question belongs to one of the self-contained RVs or campers that is staying at the site.

The official record of decision said that “overall, commission members were satisfied with the progress made,” which directly led to the CUP’s approval.

Several local residents had concerns with the potential issuing of the CUP, citing concerns such as snow removal, the proximity of the potential park to Burke Road, as well as the lack of septic services.

At this time, it has been confirmed that more than one appeal has been received concerning the approved CUP, those will need to be reviewed by the Shoshone County Prosecuting Attorney’s office before potentially getting set for a public hearing.
