A group of friends who love their community and love to golf have aced it on the links again this year.
The Coeur54 golf event, held June 8, exceeded its $25,000 goal and brought in $30,000 for two local charities — Village of Hope and First Tee of the Inland Northwest.
Village of Hope works with foster parents, social workers and community members to support vulnerable youths. First Tee introduces golf and its inherent values to young people.
"We feel super blessed to be the recipient of it and that these guys would be willing to play so many holes and just to even consider Village of Hope," Nikki Longwell, who is Village of Hope co-president with Rachael VanValin, said Monday. "They're a lot of good guys involved in a lot of good things."
The inaugural event featured eight golfers who played for pledges for nearly 10 hours at the Coeur d'Alene Public Golf Club, Avondale Golf Course in Hayden and the Hayden Lake Country Club. They raised $15,000 for CDAIDE, a local nonprofit that serves workers in the service and hospitality industries. That event was initially called the COV’AIDE 54 Invitational.
This year's event was doubled as the founding players invited more to chip in their altruistic athleticism as they again played 54 holes.
“We would like to give special thanks for their continued support to the Coeur d'Alene Public Golf Course, Avondale Golf Course, Hayden Lake Country Club and The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course for providing the online scoring," event spokesman Dustin Ainsworth said. "On behalf of the first tee were board members Jason Kelly and Ryan Deschryver. Honorable mention to Stew Kuespert, who was the top earner in donations among the group this year."
Ainsworth said the players would all like to give a huge thank you to the community for supporting their event and raising a record amount of funds that will go back into the community.
"We couldn’t have done this without the support of the local golf courses and the many individuals and businesses that stepped up and donated," he said. "We are excited to build on our momentum and next year support many other organizations in our community."

Lakes Middle School eighth graders explore Civil War through demonstrations
Reel dancing was a fine way to spend time in 1800s America. It was popular again Monday during an American Civil War reenactment at Lakes Middle School, where students lined up, faced each other and galloped two-by-two along the rows, dipping and diving through arm arches and clapping along as they gave the Boston Tea Party dance a whirl. “I love the hands-on," eighth grader Jonathan Mohr said. "It’s a lot more educational in my opinion."
