Open burning season ends July 1 in Flathead County

Open burning season will end July 1 in Flathead County and northern Lake County.
Debris burning is prohibited through July, August and September due to increased fire danger. Open burning will begin again Oct. 1 or as conditions allow.
According to the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, more than 75% of wildfires in the Flathead each summer are caused by human activity, with top causes including illegal debris burns.
High temperatures quickly dry out forest fuels and create hazardous burning conditions. State officials warn that dedicated firefighting resources are stretched thin this fire season.
The DNRC offers these safety tips:
- If hauling boats, RVs or equipment, adjust trailer chains so they don't drag on the ground. Dragging trailer chains throw sparks into dry grass and may quickly ignite fast-spreading roadside fires.
- Use water, dirt and a shovel to extinguish any campfires until they are cold to the touch and "dead out."
- Do not drive or park hot vehicles in dry grass.
Firefighters are also reminding people to celebrate the Fourth of July responsibly. Fireworks are not allowed on any state or federal lands, and should not be discharged near dry grass or forested areas, as they can quickly ignite dry vegetation. The DNRC said "the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display sponsored by your local community."
Those who do light off fireworks should have a bucket of water, a hose or a fire extinguisher nearby and supervise children around fireworks at all times.
Anyone with questions about debris burning, preparing for wildfire season or creating defensible space around a home should call the community preparedness specialist in the DNRC's Kalispell office at 406-751-2270.
