Polson wrestlers Ryley Knutson and Maysn Cowell finished fifth in their respective weight classes at the Class A state wrestling meet last weekend at MIles City.

Knutson, a freshman wrestling at 103 pounds, finished the season with a record of 28-7. Several of his losses were against the Stewart brothers of Frenchtown over the course of the season. After winning his initial match by fall, Knutson met up with Isaac Stewart, a sophomore, in the quarterfinals and lost a 9-4 decision. Stewart went on to finish second after being pinned by his older brother Landen Stewart, a senior, in the championship match.

After the semifinal loss, Knutson pinned Josh Prindle of Billings in a consolation match. He lost his next match with an 11-5 decision against Caleb Smith of Miles City, then wrapped up his season with an injury-default win in the fifth-place match.

Fellow Pirate Maysn Cowell, a senior, went 3-2 on the weekend at 126 pounds. He opened the tournament with pins against Dominick Perkins of Havre-Box Elder and Angelo Castro of Whitefish.

He lost his next two matches, one by fall to Columbia Falls’ Justin Windauer, who finished 22-1, and one by 9-2 decision to Kason Olson of Fergus.

Cowell ended his season with a decisive 15-6 decision over Laurel’s Johnathan Herr in the fifth-place match.

Sidney-Fairview ran away with the team title with 326.5 points. Polson finished 13th with 40 points. Ronan finished 18th with 26 points, including a team-high six points from Landon Bishop at 138 pounds. Bishop went 2-2 at the tournament and just missed placing when he was ousted by Laurel’s Owen Younger in a consolation match.

The Chiefs also received five points from Trapper McAllister at 152 pounds. He lost in the quarterfinals to eventual third-place finisher Grady Nelson of Sidney/Fairview. McAllister followed the loss with a close 2-1 decision over Brennan Hager of Custer. His season came to an end with a sudden victory loss to Hardin’s Kayden Howe, who finished fourth.

Five compete at Shelby

The Mission Valley also sent five wrestlers to the Class B/C tournament at Shelby over the weekend.

Colt Crawford, Arlee’s lone representative, just missed placing at 145 pounds after going 2-2 with a decision victory and a pin. He finished with a 22-7 record after a consolation round loss by fall to Glasgow’s Devon Nesbit.

Canyon Sargent also went 2-2 and scored six team points for Mission-Charlo. Sargent pinned Cade Ball of Fort Benton-Big Sandy in his 152-pound opener, then was pinned by eventual state champ Colten Fast of Glasgow, who went 38-2 on the season.

Sargent got another pin in a consolation match before losing a 16-2 decision to Cutbank’s Ty Curry.

Kody Dillard went 1-2 to earn three team points for Mission-Charlo.
