Quincy girls soccer took down Wahluke at home 8-4 Saturday at Quincy High School in a high-scoring battle.
Quincy’s Emily Wurl and Wahluke’s Ana Andrade combined for 9 goals, with Andrade kicking off scoring a few minutes into the first half to put the Warriors ahead 1-0.
Wurl responded with a pair of goals within minutes of each other, putting the Jacks back in front roughly 10 minutes later. Quincy’s Karla Nunez added another goal before the half to bring the score to 3-1.
Andrade would score three more in the second half to keep the Warriors in contention, but the Warriors couldn’t match the barrage from the Quincy attack. Wurl scored three more goals in the second half, while teammates Sheridan Donovan and Brianna Herrera each added a goal.
Andrade said after the game her team was lacking in the first half, but picked things up after the break.
“The second half, we fought hard and we tried to come back,” Andrade said. “They scored some pretty good goals, I’m not gonna lie.”
Andrade said the Warriors are learning from every game. She said every mistake the team finds, they’re working to fix.
Warriors head coach Cele Lopez said his team has a practically brand-new defense with freshmen this year who are still trying to learn the ropes. Lopez said his underclassmen are starting to get the hang of things, and the goal right now is improving before the fall season.
“My sweeper didn’t know how to kick the ball at the beginning of the season. Now she’s kicking it 20, 25 yards, so that’s a big improvement,” Lopez said. “They’re talking a lot more, they’re shifting side to side, which is super impressive.”
As the younger players get more experience and build their confidence, Lopez said the play on the field will follow suit. It’s nice having a player like Andrade up front as a “lifesaver,” he said, particularly when his team is up against an opponent with talent of their own in the attack.
Quincy head coach Francisco Tafoya said his junior forward Wurl helps the offense, not just in scoring, but in creating space for other players to capitalize on.
Wurl said creating that space for her teammates is something she wants to continue working on. After the win Saturday, Wurl said it is nice getting the program’s name on the radar a little bit with another strong performance.
Wurl said the strong offensive performance felt like almost a “relief” to see.
“I’ve been putting a lot of extra work in, so it’s nice to see it paying off on the field,” she said.
