March 11, 1971 – PROUDLY WE SALUTE

Airman William S. Lawson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Lawson, a 1970 SHS graduate, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex.

Pvt. E2 Dennis R. Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Myers, Samuels, graduated from basic combat training school at Fort Lewis, Wash. and will take 9 weeks of infantry mortar instruction.

SAFETY SLOGAN CONTEST WINNERS

Winner in the Bonner County Farm Bureau’s annual Safety Slogan Contest were announced. Winners in the 4th - 6th grades were Susan Kay Sawyer, Lincoln School, first place; Ann Loretta Johnson, Farmin School, second; Doria Mae Shreffler, Southside School, third. The 7th - 12th grade winners, all from Southside School, are: Donna Doreen Knauss, first; Judy Lynette Sorenson, second; and Eric Charles Taylor, third. Posters are displayed in various Sandpoint stores.

CLARK FORK TEAM BEAT SANDPOINT

The Clark Fork Fighting Cocks beat the Sandpoint town team 91-89 Sunday in a hard fought game in Clark Fork. Sandpoint players and their scores were: Dave Dillon, 35; Mike Parkins, 15; Lyle Bergstrom, 0; Ralph Sletager, 10; Vance Ekwortzell, 12; Randy James, 4; Smoky Chubb, 13; Bill Beyer, 0. Clark Fork team members were Kenny Butler, 5; Verlin Munson, 10; Paul Tallman, 10; Dale Munson, 17; George Thornton, 25; Leroy Munson, 16; Jim Dawson, 0; Rusty Rounsville, 8.

March 11, 1921 – GOOD CITIZENS MEETING

A good citizens’ meeting will be held by the united Protestant churches of Sandpoint Sunday at the Methodist Episcopal church. We aim to make our city the best moral city in north Idaho. Come show your appreciation. Prayer meetings will be held Thursday at the M.E. church [4th and Oak] and at 707 Oak street.

PEND D’OREILLE CREAMERY SCORCHED

Tuesday evening a fire alarm put the town on the move. Those who persisted in looking found a fire at the Pend d’Oreille creamery and it was a wild and fierce one. The tin roof and a strong south wind made it difficult to fight. The sawdust in the top of the ice house was dry and water had little effect on it, so when subdued in one place it immediately broke out in another. For a time it appeared the whole structure was doomed and only the firemen’s good work saved the front part where much valuable material was stored. The damage will probably amount to close to $1000 but the building will be speedily repaired.

LOCAL BRIEFS

H.H. Taylor arrived home from Boise last night after seeing the bill for the new state go through.

The International Cement company is moving its plant from Cement to Lakeview. Improvements of $15,000 are being made, including a power plant.
