COEUR d’ALENE — The Idaho state women's bowling tournament gets rolling this Saturday at Sunset Bowling Center.

It’s the first time the championship has been held in North Idaho.

“It’s great that we’re having it here,” said Ken Cook, president of the Greater Coeur d’Alene United States Bowling Congress. “We can support the tournament."

About 400 bowlers from around the state and locally will compete for cash prizes and trophies in singles, doubles and foursomes. Action will continue into the weekend of April 17 and 18.

The tournament, which has a full field, was open to anyone who wanted to register. While most are very good — some carry averages in the 150 range — it’s not for professionals.

Cook, who carries a 176 average in leagues at Sunset and River City Lanes, said they put in a bid for the tourney and added $1,000 in prize money.

Their bid knocked down all the pins. Organizers struck early, spared no expense and avoided any splits.

Having the tournament here is a sign of a good relationship between northern and southern Idaho bowling officials, Cook said.

“It should be a good show,” he said.

Opening ceremonies are set for 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Idaho State USBC Association’s 73rd annual open champion tournament is in Lewiston from April 3 to April 25.

Even if a family saved $25,000, they would still be $19,000 short of the down payment needed to buy a $550,000 home, which is the median price in Kootenai County. It’s estimated that only about 20% of area households can afford to buy a home.
