MERIDIAN — Senior Devry Bursch pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the Lakeland Hawks wrapped up play at the Win The Pitch Spring Break Classic with a 12-0 victory over Wood River of Hailey at Meridian High.

Bursch, a left-hander, walked none for Lakeland (3-5). She struck out the first six batters she faced. Two batters reached on errors for Wood River.

“She just turned it on today; she threw so well,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said of Bursch, who suffered a hyperextended right knee vs. Coeur d’Alene a week and a half ago. “Her screwball was just nasty, and she was really throwing hard — the hardest I’ve ever seen her throw.”

Cienna Walls went 3 for 3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored for the Hawks, who scored eight runs in the first inning. Hailey Gosch had a pair of hits for Lakeland.

Earlier, Lakeland put together another eight-run first inning en route to a 17-5 victory over Meridian.

Haylee Smit hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Walls was 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs. Harley See was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored for Lakeland, which went 3-3 in its stretch of six games in three days in the Treasure Valley.

“The girls just really hit well,” Bevacqua said. “Today was just a breakout day. We hit well all weekend, and we cleaned up the errors.”

Lakeland returns to action next Saturday at home, vs. Moscow in a doubleheader.

Sandpoint 10-13

Moscow 8-2

SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs desperately wanted a victory Saturday at War Memorial Field.

And they got one, and another by completing a doubleheader sweep of Inland Empire League rival Moscow.

The Bulldogs lost their first three games this season by 12 or more runs and didn't make it past the fifth inning in any of them.

"Getting the wins today, it's really what this team deserves," Sandpoint coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said. "They've been working very hard to catch up and to learn how to play softball at a varsity level."

The first game of the doubleheader was a thriller. With no outs and runners on first and second, junior Via Barlow hit a single to score Lily Gammon and Jaden Dickinson and give Sandpoint a 10-8 walk-off win.

Hawkins-Williams said a victory like that was exactly what the Bulldogs needed to build their confidence, and she was glad Barlow was the one that came through in the clutch.

"I'm super happy that it was Via that got that hit because she's new to varsity," she said, "and trying to find her role on the team ... and so for her to get that was a big deal."

Sandpoint dominated Moscow in the second game and scored seven runs in the fifth inning to 10-run rule the Bears.

Jaidyn Inman had six hits on the day for the Bulldogs, who totaled 23 hits.

"We've had a lot of strikeouts to start the season and it started to get better against Timberlake," Hawkins-Williams said, "but just to see them swinging the bats today was really nice to see ... and when you do that, you find success because you put the ball in play and put pressure on the defense."

Sandpoint (2-3, 2-2 IEL) hosts Bonners Ferry in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Thursday.
