MOSCOW — Sandpoint baseball kept on ticking Saturday, grabbing a pair of road wins over Inland Empire League rival Moscow.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Bulldogs 10-run ruled the Bears and sailed to a 20-4 win. In the second, SHS scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure a 8-5 victory.

Sandpoint scored eight runs in the sixth inning to close out Moscow in the first game.

"We got off to a good start and we just continued to roll," head coach Chase Tigert said about the offensive production.

Sophomore Cody Newhart was dominant on the mound and at the plate in the first game against the Bears. He started on the bump and earned the win by allowing just five hits across 4 2/3 innings while striking out five. At the plate, Newhart went 4 for 6 and tallied four RBIs.

"He competed at the plate, he competed at the bump and it was the first time this year he has thrown on a dirt mound, and he did really well," Tigert said. "At the plate, he's always one of those guys you can count on to be consistent and hit the ball hard, and that's exactly what he did."

In the sixth inning, junior Ethan Butler blasted a grand slam and he finished with six RBIs in the game.

In the second game, things were a lot more interesting and the teams went back and forth throughout.

"They put up two runs in the bottom of the first and from that point forward it was a game," Tigert said.

Sandpoint clung to a 4-2 lead entering the fifth, but in the bottom of the inning Moscow hit a two-run triple to tie things up.

With the score still knotted at 4-4, Evan Williams hit a double in the top of the seventh to score Max Thielbahr and Jack Zimmerman. The Bulldogs added two more runs before Zeke Roop closed the deal in the bottom of the inning and earned the victory.

Tight games have become part of the regular routine for the Bulldogs this season. Four of their five games have been decided by three runs or fewer.

Sandpoint battled and that's something Tigert has seen from his squad all spring.

"That was really exciting that they just continued to compete and never once put their heads down," he said about the second game. "Their composure in tight games is just incredible ... Moscow just kept creeping back and our guys just played calm under pressure and continued to execute."

Williams came in and relieved Thielbahr on the mound with one out in the first inning. He lasted 4 2/3 innings and gave up just two hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

It was Williams' first action on the bump this season, and Tigert said it was a great debut.

"We've been waiting to get him on the bump for a while, so it was exciting he was feeling good enough ... and he gave us a chance to win that game and I was really proud of him," he said.

SHS recorded four hits in the second game while Moscow only had two.

Sandpoint (4-1, 4-1 IEL) heads to Bonners Ferry for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
