The Bonner County Human Rights Task Force is holding a contest for their new logo design in anticipation of the group’s 30th anniversary.

The organization originally formed in response to the white supremacist Aryan Nation compound that was once based in Hayden before a lawsuit led to the hate group’s compound being demolished, said BCHRTF member Brenda Hammond.

“We started out to take a stand against the Aryan Nation,” she said. “They were trying to expand to Bonner County at that time.”

Since then, the BCHRTF has broadened its reach to advocate for human rights for people with mental health challenges, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ communities and other groups, Hammond said.

Hammond was the one to come up with the concept for the original design years ago, she said. With the help of a local graphic artist, the group has used that design since then.

As the anniversary approaches, the nonprofit’s board decided it would be a good time to update its logo, Hammond said.

“I just feel like we’ve become more of an integral part of the community, and it makes sense to ask them to help us with this,” Hammond said.

One consideration the board will look at in the design is some incorporation of the natural beauty of the regional landscape, she said. The preservation of that natural beauty is something that even people of different political backgrounds often have in North Idaho.

Another thing she would like to see, Hammond said, would be something to represent reaching across the political divide — something she said the BCHRTF strives for.

“Human rights apply to everyone regardless of their political ideology,” she said.

The deadline for the logo contest is April 20, and the winner will receive $500 and recognition in the BCHRTF publication. More information is available at bchrtf.org.
