COEUR d’ALENE — Although it was tagged as "a night of mischief," Hospice of North Idaho's 36th annual Wine Taste and Auction was an incredible night of giving.

The 250 who attended the Carnevale di Venezia-themed soiree last Saturday evening at the Hagadone Event Center raised their glasses and their paddles to fetch $200,000 for the nonprofit. That helps cover unreimbursed expenses for patients needing expert end-of-life care and comfort throughout Kootenai, Shoshone and Benewah counties.

"The evening was fun, spirited and enjoyed by all," said Hospice of North Idaho executive director Kim Ransier.

After more than a year of canceled events, supporters were ready to get out, see friends and raise money for a cause dear to their hearts.

The Venetian theme was a hit, too. Many dressed in period costumes and wore specially designed and handmade masquerade ball masks.

Local food vendors provided gourmet snacks and nearly 100 wines from area distributors kept guests' palates refreshed.

Raffles and auctions sent attendees out the door with prizes including diamond earrings and date night packages.

Ransier said the event continues to be one of the best in the region.

"As more people move to our area, we hope they embrace our community values and support our nonprofit communities," Ransier said. "If Saturday night was any indication, they will continue to uphold these services we hold dear and guarantee needed services for years to come."

At no charge to them or their families, Hospice of North Idaho provides compassionate and collaborative care and comfort for those who are seriously ill or at the end of life.
