MLHS meet lets athletes tune up before districts

Moses Lake High School hosted teams from the North Central Washington Region last Thursday for the Chiefs’ lone home track and field meet this season, celebrating Senior Night and the team’s 18 seniors.
Moses Lake head coach Nicki Weiland said the kids have been really positive in practice and events all season and added it was nice to see the seniors recognized in this strange year. She said the kids have done a good job of coaching and supporting one another before and after events.
With the reduced season, Weiland said, they’ve had to move some training and other things up to speed things along.
“We’ve had to push everything like two weeks ahead,” Weiland said. “We’ve got some really good coaches. Without them, the season wouldn’t go as well as it has, and the kids wouldn’t be achieving and enjoying the success themselves.”
Weiland gave a few shoutouts to some players who have stood out for her this season. She cited Lacey Moser as a multi-event athlete who would be first or second in multiple events if regionals were to start tomorrow. Goziechi Abonyi is another Moses Lake senior who Weiland said has stepped up for any event they’ve asked her to and has performed well across the board.
On the boys’ side, Marcus Duvall and Zackary Reyer are two juniors Weiland said have been performing well. She’s excited to see what they can do as seniors with a full season next spring, she added.
Ephrata High School head coach Dan Martin said the Tigers had only had 19 practices heading into the meet in Moses Lake. Martin said the coaches have worked hard to fit everything in five weeks.
Julia Davis is a player he said has been a pleasant surprise in the 100 meter and 200 meter events, in addition to anchoring both relay teams.
“She’s just learning, she’s never been in track, so she’s been a really pleasant surprise this year,” Martin said.
Tyler Lybbert has been a senior leader for the boy’s team all season and has shown great leadership, Martin said. Joshua Green has been a good addition to the program as a sophomore, following in the footsteps of his brother, Johnny Green, who went on to run at Washington State University.
“He’s working really hard coming off a sore hamstring,” Martin said.
In the shot put and discus, Lola See is a senior athlete Martin said could go on to the next level if she wants to.
Athletes will gear up this week for the District South event in Quincy on Thursday, with the top 16 athletes in each event heading on to Wenatchee for the North Central Washington Regional meet.
