POST FALLS — Almost a year after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest, a Spokane man who didn’t show up for sentencing is being held without bail.

Anthony J. Kain, 20, of Spokane, pleaded guilty last year to possession of a stolen vehicle, a felony.

The charge stems from August 2019, when Post Falls police responded to a report of a shoplifter at Walmart.

Employees said a man, later identified as Kain, took a blender without paying for it and put it in his car before going back inside the store.

The car Kain was driving had been reported stolen out of Spokane Valley, police said. Security footage reportedly showed Kain enter the car, which was parked in a gated lot, and then drive off.

Police arrested Kain at the scene.

At the time of the arrest, Kain reportedly had an active warrant out of Washington state for escape from community custody.

Kain pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property in April 2020.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors reportedly agreed to recommend Kain, who was 19 at the time, serve nothing longer than a rider program.

When a judge chooses to retain jurisdiction in a case, commonly referred to as a rider, the offender will spend up to a year in a prison treatment program before the judge either places them on probation or sends them back to prison.

After pleading guilty, Kain was released on his own recognizance.

When Kain failed to appear in court for sentencing in July 2020, Judge Scott Wayman issued a no-bond warrant for Kain’s arrest.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies took Kain into custody on Friday morning.

Kain is being held without bail.
