KELLOGG — It was just over a year ago that the COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses and organizations to close their street front offices and embrace a more digital way of interacting with people. The Shoshone Cancer Resource Center was just one of these many entities.
As of last Monday though, the doors at their 204 Oregon St. office in Kellogg are back open and the dedicated volunteers of the group are committed now more than ever to helping those in Shoshone County that are fighting cancer.
The Resource Center is home to the Shoshone Cancer Support Corporation, which is a 501(c)(3) that provides $25 vouchers (of various types, such as fuel and prescriptions) to Shoshone County residents battling cancer of all types.
The volunteer powered group's largest fundraiser every year is the annual Tata's Party, which includes a silent and live auction that includes custom-made bras as items to bid on.
SCSC board member Linn Reese explains that, "all the money and resources we have are donated to us by our very generous community."
SCSC volunteer Jackie Fields stressed just how important volunteers are to them and invites anyone to join up. Volunteers could be expected to watch the office, handle paperwork and greet individuals who may need assistance.
Linn said that having the physical location back up and running is incredibly important to their clients.
"A lot of people right now are struggling because they didn't know that we were working through phone and mail," Linn said.
The group has historically assisted roughly 50 residents a month.
For donations or to volunteer, call 208-784-1221, ext. 532.
Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 261, Kellogg, ID 83837.
