POST FALLS — A total of 16 athletes competed for the Spartans at the District 1 Meet of Champions last Thursday.
As a team, the girls placed ninth while the boys took 10th out of the 15 District 1 schools at the meet. The top 16 athletes and eight relays across District 1 competed in the event.
Going into the all-star meet, head coach Jared Hughes said he knew the Spartans probably wouldn't rack up a lot of team points due to the level of competition, but he felt the squad posted some great times in preparation for districts.
"Individually we did pretty well," he wrote in an email. "While we didn't have any medalists, we did have several athletes and relays have season bests or improve their seeds."
Annika Rantala had the best finish in an individual event for the Spartans. She took fifth in the 3200.
Erik Deem earned sixth in the pole vault. He set a personal record with a mark of 12 feet. Dylan Lord ran a PR in the 3200 to place eighth.
Allyson Barton PR'd in the triple jump to grab seventh and she was ninth in the discus. Erika Swoboda tied for 10th in the high jump and Shane Gamber secured 10th in the 300 hurdles.
Next up for the Spartans is the 3A District 1 championships this Thursday and Friday at Timberlake High. Events start at 4 p.m. on both days.
The top four individuals in each event and the top two relays will earn berths to state.
Heading into the meet, Deem is ranked No. 1 in the district in the pole vault. Lord is seeded fourth in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200, Gamber and Jimmie Isenberger are second and third in the 300 hurdles, Levi Hanna is second in the shot put and Matyus McLain is fourth in the discus and high jump.
On the girls side, Rantala is seeded second in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600, Barton is third in the discus and triple jump and Swoboda is tied for fourth in the high jump.
