SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint tennis team dropped its final regular season match on Tuesday, falling 8-4 to Coeur d'Alene.
It was the three matchup of the season between the two schools. In the first two meetings, the match finished in a 6-6 tie.
The Vikings weren't going to let that happen again as they won five of the six singles matches to secure the victory.
"All the matches were close," head coach Kent Anderson said. "This is why we schedule Coeur d'Alene for our last match before districts every year. It's always a great tune-up."
The boys doubles pair of Tyler Korn and Carter Johnson suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 6-4, 6-4. They were that close to an undefeated regular season.
"This should offer them a little incentive going into districts," Anderson said.
Josh Embree and Christian Story grabbed a straight sets victory at No. 1 boys doubles.
Maile Evans and Berkeley Cox were able to hold on for a 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 victory at No. 2 girls doubles. Anderson said the duo used powerful, consistent serves to pull out a third-set tiebreaker win.
Brahma Heitz kept the Bulldogs from being swept in singles with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 win.
Elly Tutin was called up from JV and teamed up with Aden Heitz in mixed doubles to secure a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Sandpoint hosts the 4A Region 1 championships on Friday and Saturday. Play starts at 9 a.m. on both days. The top two finishers in boys singles, boys doubles, girls singles, girls doubles and mixed doubles will advance to state.
