Tom Wood has big shoes to fill

To the editor

I am humbled and grateful for the confidence and support from Libby Volunteer Fire Department members, my friends and family, in giving me the opportunity to fill the role as fire chief. Filling the shoes or our chief of 25 plus years will not be an easy task, but because of his teaching and mentoring abilities, Tom Wood has made the path easier. I am also thankful for our past LVFD members, state and national leaders, and instructors that have passed on their advice and knowledge throughout my 33 years of service.

Tom will remain a rostered, active member and continue to assist the department with his administrative skills and knowledge. Tom may be handing off the reins and title of the No. 1 position, but he will always be “Chief” to me.

Tom began his career in August 1971 and stepped in to the top chief position in April 1995. He has done an incredible job of leading our community ever since. With the help of our other three leadership positions, Scott Beagle, Ryan Andreessen, Jason Place and the rest of the dedicated members of LVFD, we will continue to do what we do best, serve the customers, the taxpayers of Libby, in whatever emergency service capacity we are needed.

A couple of members asked me what changes I thought we needed or wanted to put in place. If its not broke, don’t fix it. I will continue to serve with the advice of one of my national leaders in mind: Be nice, treat people how you want to be treated and remember why we are here and who we serve.

Thank you all again for your confidence and support.

Steve Lauer

Chief, Libby Volunteer Fire Department
