Play ball, two days early.
Because of bad weather that is expected at the end of this week, the Western AA Divisional softball tournament has been moved up to start today in Helena, instead of Thursday.
Action begins at 11 a.m. with three games: Missoula Sentinel vs. Missoula Big Sky; Flathead against Helena Capital; and Helena High against Butte.
At 1 p.m., top-seeded Glacier will take on winless Missoula Hellgate.
The top four teams will qualify for the State AA tournament March 28-29, at the Kidsport Complex in Kalispell.
Glacier, a state tournament team in 2019 which was really geared up for a successful 2020 season that didn’t happen because of COVID, brings a 19-2 mark to Helena.
The Wolfpack has two of top five hitters in the Western AA: Kynzie Mohl (.639) and Sammie Labrum (.556).
Freshman pitcher Ella Farrell is by far the league’s top strikeout pitcher with 121; Mohl sits in sixth in that category.
Flathead, 5-14 and seeking its first state berth since 2007, is led offensively by Brianna Morales (.365) and Alyssa Cadwalader (.357). Bravette pitchers Ilyssa Centner and Karissa Comer are capable pitchers, with Comer throwing about 60 percent of her team’s innings.
The tournament concludes with the consolation and championship games, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
