Phone scammers imitate Newport Hospital
Bonner County Daily Bee | UPDATED 3 years, 10 months AGO
NEWPORT – Newport Hospital and Health Services was notified last week that area residents were receiving voicemail messages from a caller identified as “Newport Hospital” on the caller I.D. screen.
The message indicated that the person owes a specific balance and that Newport Hospital is authorized to take the money directly out of the person’s bank account, NHHS officials said in a press release.
The message then told those answering: “If you think this is incorrect, please stay on the line to speak to a representative.” At this point, the person may be asked to provide account numbers or further validation.
NHHS administration encourages the public to remain vigilant against scams such as this one.
If people receive suspicious calls, hang up and contact Patient Financial Services directly (509-447-9351) to inquire about potential debts associated with your patient account. NHHS does not leave specific information about patients’ accounts in voicemail messages. NHHS would never utilize a “robo” call for debt collection or leave specifics about balances owed in a voicemail message.
Newport Hospital and Health Services is owned and operated by Pend Oreille County Public Hospital District. Originally established in 1921, the hospital district is in Newport, Wash. and serves residents in Pend Oreille County and western Bonner County.
