Superior School reunion makes donations to worthy groups
MONTE TURNER | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 3 years, 6 months AGO
The last one was held in 2007, but up to that point, the Superior all-class reunions were held every fiv years. Or was it 10 years?
They may have been every six or seven years now that ‘Toots’ Bricker and Sue McLees, Chief Organizers, think about it.
“Sorry but the old noodle doesn't work like it used to,” howls Bricker, Class of 1959. ‘Birdie’ Warnken was the treasurer and with her recent passing, and the motivation to organize the event every so-many-years waning, it was decided to close the account.
“Facebook is a big reason we backed off, too,” McLees stated. “So many stay in touch that way and traveling is getting tougher all of the time.”
Not being quite certain of the year this started it was meant for anyone who went to school at the old Superior High School, if they graduated or not, to come back for memories and camaraderie.
Both McLees and Bricker look at each other trying to remember when they took over the reins as being the main organizers of the event and laugh.
“I just remember I started by going to Classmates.com, when it was free, to track down former students. It took a year of prep work to pull it off,” Bricker said. “And once they committed, we’d post the names of who was coming on bulletin boards closer to the date so that people could see who was going to make it. Then we’d set up small parties at different homes and places for different classes to meet.” “It was damn well organized,” said McLees.
They closed the account and were almost startled at the amount of money left over! Now, what to do with it?
Bricker and McLees still know the pulse of the community as both remain active and social so they decided to distribute it equally to three different organizations that serve the area and can always use some extra funding.
Pool in the Park has been grinding away with fundraisers and looking for grants to replace the public swimming pool in the Eva Horning Park in Superior. The old pool is closed and will become the location of the new skate-park once the last $6,500 is raised, however, a new spot has been selected once the new pool is ready.
If you attended the ‘Go for the Gold Rodeo’ at the last Mineral County Fair (which was 2019 due to the pandemic putting the brakes on most everything in 2020), you noticed the new bleachers.
This is a project the Superior Lions took ownership of and the new ones are fancy and safe but a few more pinches are needed. Then the fair itself; county taxes are the mainstay for the event and the upkeep of the fairgrounds itself, but it’s barely keeping its head above water.
This being one of the largest annual family events made the list of recipients of the cash to be used as needed. Because this money came from the All-Class Reunion, it would only be fitting to make the small ceremony on the front steps of the old Superior School.
On a sunny afternoon, the three organizations were thanked by McLees and Bricker for their continued push to improve our community with a $2,000 check each that was surprisingly much larger than anyone expected.
Roger Kesting with the Superior Lions, Carol Johnson with the Mineral County Fair Board along with Sheryl Crabb and Jennifer Donovan from Pool for the Park were more than appreciative and excited to take this surprise back to the others in their respective organizations.
All in attendance agreed this was a fitting way to pass the torch from past students of Superior to current groups continuing to make the county special.
