The points spread out on a cool, overcast day at Legend Stadium, where Missoula Hellgate leads a balanced girls field at the Western AA Divisional track and field meet Friday.
Not far behind Hellgate (62 points), Missoula Sentinel (50) and Helena (47) sits Flathead with 32 points. Senior Hannah Perrin won a 3,200 race that, despite lacking State qualifiers Sage Brooks and Kensey May of Hellgate, went by fast.
Perrin edged Hellgate’s Abby Kendrick, winning in 11 minutes, 9.63 seconds.
“She lowered her PR by 20 seconds, which is outstanding,” Flathead coach Charlie Dotson said. “She’s peaking when it matters. She still has a big day Saturday (the 1,600 and the long relay), but I’m excited to see if she can carry this momentum into tomorrow, which I think she will.”
The quartet of Rylee Barnes, Cerise Lee, Skye Thompson and Akilah Kubi helped Flathead finish second in Friday’s short relay, in 50.55. Sentinel won in 49.83.
Dotson subbed a sore Kelcey Copping out of the relay, but then Copping ran well enough in the 100 trials to make Saturday’s finals.
Helena’s Odessa Zentz ran her best time yet in the 800, winning in 2:14.69. Hellgate’s Brooks put up a battle before finishing second at 2:16.25, followed by Helena’s Carly Ryan and Flathead freshman Lilli Rumsey Eash. Brooks and Rumsey Eash ran personal bests.
Butte’s Anna Trudnowski won twice Friday, in the 300 hurdles and high jump.
Hellgate’s Mara Parks was the best of a crowded shot put field, where Flathead’s Rebecca Eacker, already qualified for next week’s State AA meet in Missoula, didn’t place. Teammate
Alliyah Stevens surged into a sixth-place finish, however.
Glacier has 11 points, with most coming from Taylor Brisendine, who was fourth in the high jump (clearing 5-3) and fifth in the long jump.
Sentinel started out pretty dominant on the boys’ side, with William Mortenson and Tanner Klumph going 1-2 in the 3,200 and Drew Klumph winning the 300 hurdles.
The Spartans have 70 points after eight events. Butte is a distant second with 47.5.
Glacier’s Caleb Bernhardt was second in the 300s, a tough race that ended with four of the final line of hurdles tipped over. It was his first loss in three tries against Klumph, who ran 40.51.
Flathead’s Timothy Weymouth cleared 13-0 in the pole vault, which was good for fifth; Big Sky’s Josh Smalley cleared 14-9 to win it. The Braves also finished fourth in the 400 relay.
