EAGLE — Sam Becker medaled in the boys pole vault and three Bulldogs qualified for the finals in their events during the first day of the 4A state track meet on Friday.

Becker placed fifth with a mark of 13 feet in the pole vault. Head track coach Matt Brass said the senior was excited once he realized he had medaled.

"His shins were really bothering him and then we got to about 12 [feet], 6 [inches], and I think the adrenaline kind of took over and he had a couple of really solid vaults," he said. "He looked pretty crisp working his way up to 13 feet."

Sophomore Rusty Lee qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. He won his heat in the 110 hurdles and heads into the finals with the third fastest time. He also won his heat in the 300 hurdles and ran the fastest time in prelims. Lee set a new personal best in both events.

"Rusty was on his game today and just really focused," Brass said.

Braden Kappen qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200, a day after claiming the state title in the long jump. Kappen PR'd in the 100 and was third fastest in prelims. He was fifth fastest in the 200 prelims.

Brass said Kappen got a great start in both races.

"He just exploded out of the blocks," he said.

Taylor Petz earned a spot in the 100 hurdles finals. She won her heat with a 16.26.

Peyton Ennis finished 10th in the prelims for the 400, just missing out on advancing to the finals. Luke McCorkle missed out on qualifying for the 110 hurdles finals by .2 seconds. Destiny Lyons was 11th in the girls 300 hurdles prelims.

Nikolai Braedt brought home eighth in the 3200. He scored points for the Bulldogs, but finished two spots short of medaling. Braedt ran a PR of 9:36.36.

Brass said Braedt ran a really smart race and even took the lead on lap six, but it was a "dogfight."

"It was like a championship race where they were 14 people still in the race with two laps to go," he said.

The boys sprint medley relay took eighth. Ennis, Keyan Strock, Jett Lucas and Ben Ricks were on the relay.

In the girls 3200, Megan Oulman captured 14th and Ara Clark was 16th. Stone Lee tied for seventh in the boys high jump, Slate Fragoso earned 12th in the boys pole vault, Will Hurst claimed 15th in the boys shot put and Kayla Remsen placed 17th in the girls discus.

As a team, the boys sit in sixth after day one. The girls have not scored any team points yet.

"Everyone was really focused on trying to get their best results and I think that we did that," Brass said about Friday's events.

Events for the final day of the state meet start at 8 a.m. PST Saturday.
