Flathead’s Eacker, Glacier’s Brisendine win divisional titles

There are plenty of heroes to choose from for Glacier’s half-point edge over Missoula Big Sky for fourth place in the Western A boys’ divisional Saturday, including Tate Kauffman and Kale Mayhue.
Each provided a point for a sixth-place finish at Legends Stadium, Kauffman in the high jump and Mayhue in the triple jump.
Kauffman, meanwhile, was runner-up in the triple with a mark of 42 feet, 7 inches, and was part of a pattern: While Kalispell’s individual champions came from the girls’ side — Glacier’s Taylor Brisendine in the triple jump and Flathead’s Rebecca Eacker in the discus — the Wolfpack boys served up plenty of seconds.
Missoula Sentinel won the boys’ team title with 147 points, with Butte next at 124.5 and Missoula Hellgate a distant third at 63. Glacier had 51 points and in addition to Kauffman’s second-place finish, Caleb Bernhardt ran second in the 110 hurdles and Jeff Lillard was runner up in the 400.
Lillard ran a tough race but couldn’t quite catch Missoula Big Sky’s Kade Olson, who won in 50.69 seconds.
“I knew that kid was out there,” said Lillard, a sophomore who ran a personal-best 51.16. “I could hear him coming on the third (corner). So I had to push him.”
It was the first time they’d faced each other.
“It was good competition,” Lillard said. “That’s what I wanted.”
Kauffman’s career-best triple jump leaves him No. 2 in Class AA — behind Butte Christian Hanson, who won with 42-10 Saturday. Hanson in turn relegated Glacier to second in another event: the 1,600-meter relay.
The Wolfpack’s Jake Turner ran a solid first leg, Lillard seized the lead with his second leg, Connor Sullivan took over and kept the lead.
Anchor leg Xavier Stout then maintained it — until about the final 100 meters, when Hanson built about a two-stride advantage, hung on and then was mobbed by what looked like the entire Butte boys’ squad.
The Bulldogs finished in 3:28.00; Glacier had 3:28.83. They now sit 1-2 in Class AA.
Likewise, Lillard’s time in the 400 trails only Olson’s in AA, and he also took fourth in the 200 meters.
“Wasn’t expecting to get fourth,” he said. “I’m pretty happy about it. I was ranked 10th for the final.”
Mayhue is one of three seniors on the Glacier boys.
“We don’t have a lot of depth,” Lillard noted. “But the next couple of years will be good.”
Hellgate’s Ignatius Fitzgerald added a near-record setting win in the 1600 (4:15.89) to his 800 win from Friday. His time of 4:15.89 is a few strides slower than the 4:14.20 Butte’s Mike Houlihan ran in 1977.
Flathead’s girls also were fourth, scoring 66 points. Hellgate won the team title with 103, Sentinel was next at 95 and Helena — getting a huge meet from Odessa Zentz — was third with 92.
Leading the way for the Bravettes was Eacker, whose discus mark of 125-7 extends her lead in the AA ranks and puts her in the top eight for Montana, regardless of class. It was a good result on a much better day (sunny, 60-plus degrees) than Friday (cloudy, low 50s) for competition.
“My first throw was a 121,” said Eacker, whose best coming in was 118-6. “I went in really wanting to PR, but to PR twice and to get above 120, that was not expected — but really welcomed.”
Depth points came in the 1,600, where Hellgate’s Sage Brooks and Kensey May went 1-2 with Flathead’s Hannah Perrin (5:09.73, a PR) and Lilli Rumsey Eash (5:09.85, also a PR) not far behind.
Another highlight: The Bravettes’ Peyton Walker, seeded 11th and running in the slow heat, ended up fourth in the 400 with a personal record of 60.06.
Zentz, meanwhile, won in 57.33, a PR. She had another in the 200 (25.61), as she did Friday in the 800. The junior, who also anchored Helena’s victorious 1,600-meter relay, prequalified for the 100 at the State AA Friday and Saturday in Missoula.
Brisendine started her divisional with a fifth-place finish in Friday’s long jump.
Then came Saturday’s blue skies, and on her second-to-last triple jump in the finals she went 37-1.25 to move past Sentinel’s Audrey McElmurry.
“The long jump was rough,” Brisendine said. “Today was a lot better than yesterday. It was warmer outside and I had a better attitude.”
Brisendine had a leap of 36-11 in the prelims, so she PR’d twice in the event. She also ran second to Sentinel standout Brooke Stayner in the 100 hurdles.
“My body’s a little tired right now,” said the senior, who hadn’t competed in a couple weeks. “I’m a little shocked. I’m really happy. I wasn’t expecting to go crazy. It was definitely a goal of mine to go 37, so I’m super excited about that.”
