COLUMBIA FALLS — The Whitefish Bulldogs ran away with the girls’ team title at the Western A Divisional track meet on Saturday.

They scored a few individual titles in the process — Mikenna Ells in the 100 and 200 meters and Erin Wilde in the high jump.

Ells edged teammate Brooke Zetooney in the 100 and 200 and set a personal record time of 25.76 seconds in the latter. Ells and Zetooney were separated by .03 in the 100.

“They do push each other,” Whitefish girls track coach Kelliann Blackburn said. “It’s a good relationship.”

Wilde cleared 5 feet in the high jump and won on criteria over Camas Crattey of Hamilton. She was also second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

The girls’ short relay team (Mikenna Ells, Hailey Ells, Zetooney and Wilde) topped Columbia Falls with a time of 50.39, almost two seconds ahead of the Wildkats.

Hailey Ells was second in the 300 hurdles.

Lara Erickson won the 800 for Columbia Falls, which was third as a team with 72 points. Whitefish scored 128.

“They don’t complain, they’re doing what’s asked of them and they’re right where they need to be because of that,” Blackburn said of the Whitefish girls. “They’re in the best shape that they can be in. They’re ready to go.”

Whitefish is the defending state girls track champion.

Columbia Falls freshman Ally Sempf was fourth in the 100 and third in the 200. Siri Erickson finished fourth in the 800.

“This whole weekend has just been phenomenal for us,” Columbia Falls head track coach Jamie Heinz said. “We have a lot of kids that ended up qualifying for the state meet, which is great.”

Columbia Falls hosted the divisional and relied on the dedication of dozens of volunteers to keep things running smoothly.

“It was a stressful week, but everything’s going really, really smooth,” Heinz said. “I got a lot of compliments from a lot of different coaches that are really, really pleased with how things are going.”

Libby’s Rylee Boltz had a busy day, finishing fifth in the 200 and clearing 4-10 for third in the high jump.

Boltz’s teammate Jay Beagle, a University of Montana track recruit, ran a season-best 11.18 in the 100, undoubtedly pushed by Dillon’s Treyton Anderson, who nipped at his heels and finished with a time of 11.43.

Anderson got the better of Beagle in the 200 but forced the Libby senior to another season-best time— 22.82. Beagle also qualified for the state tournament in the javelin with a throw of 147-8, another season-best mark.

“The divisional weekend’s been really good to us,” Libby head track coach Josh Bean said. “Yesterday we had seven kids qualify for state and there were some really good marks by our kids and they competed really well, so we’re really happy for them.”

The Whitefish boys finished fourth with 52 points to first-place Hamilton’s 120.

Marvin Kimera was fifth in the 100 and 200. Other notable Whitefish performances were Gabe Menicke’s first place (44-0.25) in the triple jump, Talon Holmquist’s fourth place in the discus, and Bodie Smith’s third in the 300 hurdles.

Libby’s Trey Anderson tied for fourth in the high jump by clearing 5’-10 and qualified for state in the process. Ronan’s Peyton Cates, the current Class A leader, cleared 6-2 to win the event.

The State A-B track meet will be in Laurel on May 28-29.

Whitefish, Billings Central boys set for Class A soccer final

It’s safe to say it might be a low-scoring boys Class A soccer final at Billings’ Amend Park on Saturday at noon. Between the two of them, Whitefish and Billings Central have allowed fewer than 15 goals this fall. Officially, Whitefish has allowed six and Billings Central eight. Neither have allowed a goal thus far in the playoffs.
