Glacier’s Smith, Flathead’s White in state AA boys tennis semis

GREAT FALLS — Glacier’s Rory Smith is headed to the semifinals at the State AA tennis tournament in Great Falls after two wins Thursday.

Nolan White of Flathead also won twice and appears to be on a collision course to face Smith in the boys’ singles final.

In boys’ doubles, Glacier’s Ethan Purdy and Harrison Sanders were knocked into the consolation round after a Round 2 loss. They are one win away from the third-place match.

The Wolfpack is tied for third with seven points, one behind Sentinel and Helena Capital, who are tied for first. Flathead has four points.

Flathead’s girls singles players Emma Hawkins and Avery Cherot both lost their opening matches and were subsequently eliminated by consolation round losses.

In girls doubles, Glacier duo Colette Daniels and Haven Speer fell in the first round and lost in the consolation round, as did Flathead’s Bridget Crowley and Patricia Hinchey. Marcella Mercer and Claire Morris of Flathead faced a similar fate, though they won a match in consolation before a loss to Averi Smith and Makayla Otey.

Bozeman leads the girls team race with 12 points, with Hellgate not far behind with 11. Flathead has two points.

Semifinals are set to start at 8 a.m. for singles and 9:30 a.m. for doubles.
