MISSOULA — It was a Missoula Sentinel sweep (so far) at the State AA track and field championships, where a handful of Kalispell athletes fared well at MCPS Stadium.

Sentinel’s boys piled up 132 points to leave second-place Butte (76, including two wins from sprinter Tanner Huff) far behind. Missoula Hellgate was third at 51, and Glacier tied Missoula Big Sky for fourth with 39.

Flathead managed five points, four of them coming from jumper Dylan Zink.

Among the leaders for Glacier was Tate Kauffman, who was second in the triple jump (Zink was fourth) with a mark of 42 feet, 8 inches.

The Wolfpack’s Caleb Bernhardt ran a tight second to Sentinel’s Drew Klumph in the 300 hurdles, finishing .08 behind in 40.28 seconds. All six placers ran under 41 seconds.

Bernhardt was also fifth in the high hurdles, where Sentinel’s Zac Crews added a win to his victory in the javelin.

Sam Ells was third in the 1,600 (he was fourth in Friday’s 800), and Glacier’s long relay picked up a point for taking sixth.

Sentinel’s girls title is more tenuous, since an unidentified standout athlete filed a restraining order in order to compete this weekend, according to 406mtsports.com.

The athlete allegedly ran too many events at last week’s Western AA Divisional at Legends Stadium. The Spartans ended the state meet with 91 points to 72 for Helena, 71 for Billings West and 70 for Hellgate.

Flathead’s girls were sixth with 37 points, and Glacier was ninth with 19.

No records were set at the AA meet, though Billings West’s Jaeden Wolff came close while winning the 100 meters in 12.27. The record is 12.19, set by Billings Senior’s Morgan Sulser in 2014.

Another near-record came in the girls’ triple jump, where both Glacier’s Taylor Brisendine and Sentinel’s Audrey McElmurry both sailed over 39 feet.

Brisendine, in fact, went 39-4 on her final attempt to lead; McElmurry then went 39-7.5 on her last jump to win. The AA record is 39-9.25.

Brisendine was also fifth in the 100-meter hurdles while teammate Sidney Gulick was third in the 300s.

Flathead’s Rebecca Eacker took third in her signature event, the discus, which Billings Skyview’s Alison Jenkins won.

Skye Thompson picked up a medal by placing sixth in the 300 hurdles for the Bravettes, and freshman Lilli Rumsey Eash finished fourth in a talented 1,600 meters field.
