Grab some popcorn and party like it's 1920.
“The Mark of Zorro,” a silent adventure romance film, will be playing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hayden Cinema.
Released in 1920, the movie first introduced Zorro, played by Douglas Fairbanks.
“It’s an exciting film,” said Larry Telles, a silent film historian and organizer of the event. “It's one of my favorites, so that's why I decided to show it. And it’s 101 years old and it still holds up as a film.”
Telles said he is hoping to show one silent film a quarter, depending on the success of Tuesday’s showing.
“A lot of people have never seen a silent film,” Telles said. “I do it because it's an art that is lost.”
Telles said only about 20% of silent films are left, and they deteriorate, so his work to restore old movies stems from a love of them.
To prepare a film, Telles said he has to digitize it, get a friend to add in the music, then synchronize the music to the film. The process can take up to four weeks.
“Sound came out and all of a sudden the silent films are gone,” Telles said. “This is just a love of film.”
Tickets for “The Mark of Zorro” are $8 and can be purchased at hdcmovies.com.
