Just when you wonder if anybody reads this stuff, you get this response:
"I had to make you wrong one of these weeks," Lake City coach Brian Fulp said to Press sports writer Jason Elliott, as our intrepid reporter approached the Timberwolves' head man for an interview after Lake City's 26-12 home victory over Moscow last Friday.
Jason had picked Moscow to beat Lake City, which would have been the Bears' first football victory over the Timberwolves in school history.
This week, 5A Lake City takes on another 4A squad, as the T-Wolves travel to Sandpoint to face the Bulldogs, who are already 2-1 against teams in the 5A IEL.
Sandpoint handled Post Falls in the season opener, lost by two points to Coeur d'Alene the following week and last week rallied past Lewiston in overtime, handing the Bengals their first loss.
Sandpoint has won two of the last three from Lake City, both wins coming in Sandpoint.
Last year, the Bulldogs prevailed 20-15 on the new artificial turf at Barlow Stadium, and Lake City won 21-13 at home a few weeks later.
Meanwhile, Coeur d'Alene finally plays its first game at home tonight, vs. Ferris of the Greater Spokane League. The Vikings were scheduled to play at home three weeks ago, but ... COVID.
For the bigger schools, this is the final week of nonleague games. League play is scheduled to begin next week.
Tonight's St. Maries at Bonners Ferry game was canceled, with the visiting Lumberjacks in the middle of a three-week pause throughout all of their fall sports, due to COVID-19.
As for the picks, Mark went 4-0 last week, Jason 2-2. For the season, Mark is 20-11, Jason 17-14.
TONIGHT'S GAMES
All 7 p.m.
Ferris (2-2) at Coeur d’Alene (3-1)
NELKE: Whether playing near or far, the Vikings looking to be rounding into form at just the right time.
Coeur d'Alene, 47-14
ELLIOTT: Coeur d'Alene is usually pretty fired up to play at home on any other Friday night. As a team that's doing it for the first time this season ..
Coeur d'Alene, 66-20
Lake City (2-2) at Sandpoint (2-2)
NELKE: Whatever we can do to help rile up the local team.
Sandpoint, 24-20
ELLIOTT: Hey, mistakes happen. But Sandpoint is playing some pretty good football at home.
Sandpoint, 30-20
Post Falls (2-3) at Pasco (1-3)
NELKE: The Trojans are scheduled to play on the artificial turf at Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium in their final nonleague game.
Post Falls, 35-20
ELLIOTT: Post Falls seems like its found something on offense. Playing on turf will only help that.
Post Falls, 44-30
Timberlake (3-1) at Lakeland (3-3)
NELKE: 4A Lakeland has won five of the last six, and 10 of the last 12, in this matchup. But 3A Timberlake owns a win at 4A Moscow earlier this season.
Lakeland, 28-26
ELLIOTT: After Timberlake failed to find an opponent for last week's game, the preparation to go 2-0 in the 4A Inland Empire League started. Should be a fun game.
Timberlake, 28-27
Mullan/St. Regis (3-1) at Kootenai (0-3)
NELKE: Kootenai is coming off two bye weeks, and is improved from last season. But the Tigers/Tigers are loaded again.
Mullan/St. Regis 60, Kootenai 6
ELLIOTT: Mullan/St. Regis put on quite a show a few weeks ago against a Lakeside team that might be pretty good as well.
Mullan/St. Regis 58, Kootenai 8
Kendrick (3-1) at Lakeside (2-3)
NELKE: Kendrick beat Lewis County 82-12 last week. Lakeside beat Lewis County 30-26 in the season opener.
Kendrick, 54-20
ELLIOTT: Lakeside is getting some guys back healthy, but Kendrick might be a little too much to handle tonight.
Kendrick, 48-28
