COEUR d’ALENE — A convicted rapist is back in jail after police said he failed to update his sex offender registration information.

Gailord L. Mathis, 69, of Coeur d’Alene, is charged with two counts of failure to update registration information, both felonies.

Prosecutors also filed a persistent violator enhancement.

Mathis has two previous felony convictions out of Spokane County, according to court documents.

He was reportedly convicted of carnal abuse in 1976 and the rape of a child in 2012.

The new charges stem from Sept. 27, when Idaho State Police informed the Kooentai County Sheriff’s Office that Mathis had not returned an updated address-verification form.

Sex offenders in Idaho are required to notify the county sheriff’s office within two business days of any changes to their address, contact information, employment or vehicle information.

When KCSO deputies contacted Mathis at his residence, they reportedly discovered that he had acquired and registered a vehicle without notifying the sheriff’s office.

Deputies arrested Mathis late Monday.

Judge Ross Pittman ordered Tuesday that Mathis be held on $40,000 bail.

Failure to update registration information is a felony in Idaho, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Any person convicted of a third or subsequent felony can face up to a life sentence.
