Callers in Montana will soon have to dial three extra digits when placing in-state calls.

With only one area code in the state, Montanans are accustomed to making local calls with only seven digits. But due to the rollout of a new 998 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, callers will have to start dialing their calls with a 406 area code on Oct. 24.

Since some seven-digit numbers in Montana begin with 988, all local callers will have to use the area code to prevent accidentally dialing the lifeline, according to a news release from the Montana Public Service Commission.

Callers can continue reaching three digit services, like 911 for emergencies, without an area code.

Contact lists and services using automated dialing with seven-digit numbers have to be updated to reflect the change. This includes call forward settings on medical monitoring, fire alarm, security and life saving systems. Officials with the public commission recommend system users call their service providers to ensure their devices are updated for 10-digit dialing.

The new three-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline goes live beginning July 16, 2022. Before then, callers looking to reach the lifeline should dial 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) to speak with suicide prevention and emergency mental health counselors.

Along with Montana, the 10-digit dialing requirement affects all 83 area codes across 37 states that use 988 as a working prefix. Calls currently billed as local calls will continue to be considered local calls, according to the release.
