OTHELLO — Othello High School hosted Quincy High School on Saturday for a non-league match resulting in the Lady Huskies taking the game 3-0.
The game started with possession by Othello and immediately the Lady Huskies were able to push downfield to the net, but the referee blew the whistle when Othello got to the goal box because of offsides. Quincy was given possession, but Othello quickly took it back before Quincy could even cross mid-field.
In the first seven minutes of the game, Othello had a nice goal shot, but Quincy goalkeeper Ryann Harrington caught it. Shortly thereafter, the Lady Huskies had another close goal attempt that got past Harrington, but was just left of the goal and missed. Othello tried yet again for a goal, but this time the ball went off to the right of the goal.
At 23 minutes left in the first half, Othello had a free kick caught by Harrington.
Throughout the game, there was a lot of pinballing between the two teams, but it ultimately resulted in possession heavily on the side of the Lady Huskies.
Othello freshman Rylinn Jones made the first goal of the game at 21 minutes left in the first half, when Harrington attempted to stop the ball, but couldn’t quite get on top and Jones didn’t relent on getting the ball into the net.
A short time later, Jones had a line drive down the middle of the field, but Harrington caught the ball, thwarting the goal.
With 10 minutes left, Othello senior captain Hailee Guzman hit the ball into the net with her head after an assist by senior Ashley Perez, resulting in the second goal for the Lady Huskies.
At the end of the first half, Othello had a 2-0 lead. With the lead and Othello’s consistency with possession, Othello put in some of its reserve players for the second half.
“This game really afforded us the opportunity to have a lot of our younger players go in there,” said Othello head coach Juan Garcia. “For the entire second half, or a majority of the second half, we had a lot of our reserve players go in there and step up to the plate, which is good for them; not only going into postseason to get their feet wet in competition, but hopefully looking for the future of the program, as well, and them kind of knowing what we expect of them in the field.”
Ten minutes into the second half, the ball barely saw Quincy’s side of the field to score. About halfway through though, Sheridan Donovon had a clear goal attempt for Quincy, but shot too high and went over the goal.
Othello continued its push and made one more goal in the second half, by junior Ruby Trinidad, to bring the score to 3-0. There were also a lot of other close goal attempts by Othello that either barely missed or were thwarted by Quincy’s goalkeeper.
Othello took the match 3-0.
“Our key players are going to graduate this year; we’ve been fortunate to have them and coach them,” Garcia said.
Othello’s current record is 6-4 in the conference and 9-5 overall.

Ag issues on docket in 2023 Washington Legislature
OLYMPIA — The 2023 Washington Legislature session included bills to support agriculture. House Bill 1138, concerning drought preparedness, is one piece of that legislation. “We’ve been working on that for two to three years,” said Rep. Tom Dent, a sponsor of the bill. “So we get into a drought in different areas of the state and the drought committee comes together and puts together a plan to help people in the drought-affected area to mitigate the effects of the drought, whether it means through use of emergency wells, financial assistance, (or other measures).” HB 1138, requested by the Department of Ecology, adjusts the circumstances in which the Drought Committee is authorized to convene. The bill amends these circumstances to include when a drought advisory is in effect and when a drought emergency order is in effect.
