MERIDIAN — At the state tournament, everyone’s good, with Division I athletes on some rosters.

On Friday, it was the college kids from Lake City that were great..

Elliotte Kortus scored in the fourth minute on an assist from Georgia Whitehead for Lake City, which advanced to the state 5A championship game with a 1-0 win over the Highland Rams of Pocatello at Rocky Mountain High on Friday.

“It was just a typical scoring moment from Georgia and Elliotte,” said Lake City coach Matt Ruchti of Kortus and Whitehead, both juniors who have verballed to play at Washington State. “It was a great buildup out of the back at the midfield, Georgia played a great vertical ball to Elliotte, and when she gets the ball in that spot, she just scores goals.”

Lake City (16-2-0), seeded fourth, will face third seeded Boise (16-3-1) in the championship match today at 1 p.m. at Rocky Mountain High. Boise beat Rocky Mountain 5-3 on penalty kicks to advance.

“I thought our game plan was really good,” Ruchti said. “Highland has great athletes all over the field. But our kids really stepped up and showed some grit. We went against the wind in the first half and got a goal out of our frontrunners. The wind picked up in the second half, and we got pinned in a little. Our back line, they’re just gamers and they come to play each match and grind out each moment on the field.”

Lake City won state titles in 2012 and 2016, and finished runner-up in 2017.

Boise is looking for its first championship since 2013.

“It’s going to take a massive effort to do it again tomorrow,” Ruchti said. “But I wouldn’t take any other group but this one. Boise’s a great team and it’s going to be a good one.”

EAGLE — The Timberwolves’ bid to reach the state title game for the first time since 1998 fell short with the loss to the Brave in a 5A semifinal game at Eagle High.

Boise scored on “a sloppy bouncing ball in a crazy wind storm,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said.

It was the first loss of the season for top-seeded Lake City (18-1-1).

“I’ve got a great group of young men and we’ve had an awesome season… we simply chose the wrong day to not play our best game,” Rich said. “On any other day I believe we would beat Boise with this group but we didn’t execute as well as we are capable of. We allowed 1 goal and that was enough. This group is very competitive and the seniors know that tomorrow’s game is their last high school game. They will be focused because that’s who they are and that’s their character.”

Boise (14-2-4) advances to play Timberline (17-1-2) of Boise in the state title game today.

“I told them that I am super proud to have been a part of their great season, to hold their heads high for all they have accomplished and that we need to shake off today’s result and refocus on the final game tomorrow,” Rich said. “I love this group of guys and today’s loss does not

change any of that. We are glad to be able to present North Idaho in the third round tomorrow.”

CALDWELL — Isabella Lucky scored two goals for the Panthers, who fought back to beat the Bulldogs in a loser-out match at Vallivue High.

“Kimberly was very physical, but we were able to look a little more like ourselves today after a crushing overtime loss yesterday,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “I’m very proud of the girls for having the courage to show up and lay hard today after having to adjust their team goal for the season. They showed a lot about their character today.”

Rebekah Hines also scored for Coeur d’Alene Charter (17-2-0), which faces Marsh Valley (14-3-2) in the consolation championship match today at Vallivue High.

CALDWELL — The Tigers, seeded eighth in the tournament, were shut out by the fourth seeded Eagles in a loser-out game in the state 3A tournament at Vallivue High.

Timberlake finished 11-7-0.

Abby Marshall scored three goals for Marsh Valley (14-3-2), which faces Coeur d’Alene Charter (17-2-0) in the consolation championship match today at 9 a.m. at Vallivue High.

CALDWELL — The Panthers, seeded fourth, fell to the top seeded Cutthroat Trout in a loser-out match in the state 3A tournament at Vallivue High.

Coeur d’Alene Charter finished 13-4-1.

Nils Galloway scored two goals for Sun Valley Community School (17-2-2), which faces American Falls (15-3-0) in the consolation championship match today. American Falls eliminated Bonners Ferry 4-0 earlier on Friday.
